My Therapeutic Approach

Evidence-based methods delivered with warmth, compassion, and respect

An Integrative, Client-Centered Approach

My therapeutic approach is founded on the belief that each person is unique, with individual needs, strengths, and challenges. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all methodology, I draw from multiple evidence-based therapeutic modalities to create a personalized treatment approach for each client.

While I utilize various techniques and frameworks, my approach is always guided by these core principles:

Collaborative Partnership

You are the expert on your own experience, and I am here to provide guidance, support, and expertise in the therapeutic process. Together, we form a partnership in which we work collaboratively toward your goals.

Compassionate Presence

I create a warm, non-judgmental space where you can feel safe to explore difficult emotions and experiences. True healing begins with being fully seen and accepted.

Cultural Humility

I respect and honor the diverse cultural backgrounds, identities, and life experiences that shape each person's perspective. I approach cultural differences with openness, curiosity, and a commitment to ongoing learning.

Strength-Based Focus

While acknowledging challenges, I emphasize identifying and building upon your inherent strengths, resilience, and resources. This approach fosters empowerment and sustainable change.

Therapeutic Modalities

I integrate several evidence-based therapeutic approaches, drawing from each based on your specific needs and goals:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns that influence emotions and behaviors. This approach is particularly effective for anxiety, depression, and stress management, providing practical tools to challenge distorted thinking and develop healthier perspectives.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This approach explores how past experiences, often from childhood, influence current patterns and challenges. By bringing unconscious processes into awareness, psychodynamic therapy helps create insight and understanding, allowing for deeper, more sustainable change.

Attachment-Based Therapy

Attachment theory provides a framework for understanding how early relationships shape our connection patterns throughout life. This approach is especially helpful for relationship issues, helping you understand and transform ingrained attachment patterns.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR is a specialized approach for processing traumatic memories and reducing their ongoing impact. Through bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps the brain process disturbing material in a way that leads to peaceful resolution.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Mindfulness practices involve bringing awareness to the present moment with acceptance and without judgment. These techniques help develop greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically to life's challenges.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

This pragmatic approach focuses on identifying solutions rather than dwelling on problems. By clarifying goals and building on existing strengths and successes, solution-focused work creates momentum toward positive change.

Faith-Integrated Counselling (Optional)

For clients who wish, I am glad to integrate faith and spirituality into our work together. As an ordained minister holding a Master of Divinity in Clinical Counselling, I can bring a Christian perspective to therapy — questions of meaning, prayer, and spiritual life — always at your invitation and your pace. Faith is never a requirement: clients of all beliefs and backgrounds are welcome, and your therapy is always guided by your own goals and values.

What to Expect in Therapy

Initial Assessment

The first 1–3 sessions typically focus on gathering information about your current challenges, relevant history, strengths, and goals. This information helps us develop a shared understanding of your situation and create a personalized treatment plan.

Collaborative Goal Setting

Together, we'll identify specific, meaningful goals for our work. These goals will guide our process and provide a way to measure progress. Goals may evolve as therapy progresses and new insights emerge.

Active Therapy Phase

During this phase, we'll work together using various therapeutic techniques to address your challenges, develop new skills, process difficult experiences, and move toward your goals. This phase often involves both insight-building and practical skill development.

Consolidation and Completion

As you make progress and achieve your goals, sessions may become less frequent. We'll work on consolidating gains, planning for ongoing growth, and preparing for the end of formal therapy. The tools and insights you've gained continue to support your journey long after our work concludes.

My Commitment to Ethical Practice

As a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), I adhere to the highest ethical standards in my practice. This includes:

  • Confidentiality: What you share in therapy remains private, with limited exceptions required by law under PHIPA (such as risk of harm to self or others).
  • Informed consent: You have the right to understand the therapeutic process, potential risks and benefits, and alternative options.
  • Professional boundaries: I maintain clear professional boundaries to ensure a safe, therapeutic relationship.
  • Continued education: I regularly engage in professional development to ensure my practice reflects current research and best practices.
  • Appropriate referrals: If your needs would be better served by another provider or type of service, I will help facilitate that connection.
